Janet Taylor Caldwell was born in Manchester, England on September 7th, 1900. She soon moved with her family to the United States in 1907. There, she served in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1918-1919. In 1919, she married her first husband, William F. Combs, and remained married to him until 1931. Caldwell was married three more times, the second time to Marcus Reback, the third time to a Mr. Stancell (first name unable to find), and the fourth and final time, to William Robert Prestie. Although she began writing when she was only eight years old, her first published novel was not until 1938, at the age of 37. Incidentally, she wrote her first to works, Dynasty of Death (1938) and The Eagles Gather (1940) under the male pseudonym Max Reiner.
In 1931, Caldwell graduated from the University of Buffalo in New York. During the course of her lifetime, she wrote an estimated 39 books and sold over 30 million copies during her 43-year career. Many of her novels reflected her interest in religious subject matter. In 1980, Caldwell suffered from a stroke that left her without her hearing. She died on August 30th, 1985 at age 84. At the time of her death, she was a resident in Greenwich, Connecticut.
