The first edition is introduced by Taylor Caldwell. It includes a brief description of the research she and her husband conducted on the life of Saint Luke. Together, they read over 1,000 sources in preparing for this novel. The foreward also includes brief information about pertinent biblical history. Also listed on page 3 of this edition are the series of books written by Caldwell, from 1938 until the publicaton of _Dear and Glorious Physician_. Caldwell has included a dedication on page 7, which reads, "For Dr. Samuel A. Vogel, and / Frances Vogel, Buffalo, New York".

The illustration is a vignette, using dark blue and light blue intermixing colors. Spacing between lines is even, but type size is on the small side. New chapters do not start a new page, but continue 1" below the end of the previous chapter. Chapters are headed with "Chapter 1", "Chapter 2", etc. in bold type, 0.5" above the first line of each new chapter. Type has no wear and virtually no fading. No type description noted on title page or colophon.

First edition uses smooth white paper, with a very fine, granulated texture. Paper of a thicker stock is glued to the front and back bindings, and there is also one leaf at the beginning and one leaf at the end of the thicker stock paper. Paper has very minor yellowing. The bottom and top has straight edges, while the sides are deckle edged. There are no stains or tears to speak of in the first edition copy being examined.

First edition is bound in green with vertical and horizontal dotted line grain. The spine of the book is covered in a black strip, which overlaps 1" on the front and back covers. At the top of the spine, the title and author is stamped horizontally in gold block uppercase lettering, with a green background. The publisher's name is stamped outside of the green color block in smaller gold uppercase lettering. Endpapers are white and of a thicker stock than the rest of the book. Aside from the original publisher, Doubleday, Bantam Books released 15 printings from March 1962 to May 1973. Janet Taylor Caldwell was born in Manchester, England on September 7th, 1900. She soon moved with her family to the United States in 1907. There, she served in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1918-1919. In 1919, she married her first husband, William F. Combs, and remained married to him until 1931. Caldwell was married three more times, the second time to Marcus Reback, the third time to a Mr. Stancell (first name unable to find), and the fourth and final time, to William Robert Prestie. Although she began writing when she was only eight years old, her first published novel was not until 1938, at the age of 37. Incidentally, she wrote her first to works, Dynasty of Death (1938) and The Eagles Gather (1940) under the male pseudonym Max Reiner. In 1931, Caldwell graduated from the University of Buffalo in New York. During the course of her lifetime, she wrote an estimated 39 books and sold over 30 million copies during her 43-year career. Many of her novels reflected her interest in religious subject matter. Contemporary reviews for Dear and Glorious Physician that were full of praise were a little hard to find. Several reviewers found this novel to be laboriously long and tedious. Caldwell is also criticized for offering her personal politics too liberally throughout the novel. Although acknowledged for her extensive research on the life of St. Luke, most reviewers seemed to think she would have been better off leaving out the volume of weighty details included in the story. Caldwell takes the reader through the life of St. Luke, starting with his youth and carrying him through the performance of many miracles and trials of faith. Booklist criticizes the work as a "romantic rather than realistic treatment [that]...dwells on the degeneracy of the times in an attempt to draw a parallel between ancient Mediterranean civilization and the present". Others criticized Caldwell for her portrayal of Luke as both unintelligent and a pretty boy. Catholic World paints an uninspiriting picture of the characterization Caldwell offers the reader: "Lucanus strikes this reader, at least, as a rather dimwitted figure, unable to account for his miraculous powers of healing and, even in his attraction to the new religion, a man who acts remarkedly like a twentieth century agnostic... Poor Lucanus has, over these interminable pages, an unhappy career of it. As for his career as evangelist, Miss Caldwell, voluble on all else, remains staunchly mum". On the other hand, Wis Lib Bul offers a more uplifting review of the novel: "Gripping and absorbing reading that illuminates a period and highlights the development of a man being prepared for God's purpose. The sweep and greatness of the story dwarf any defects in style. For all libraries." This novel has been out of print for several years now. As such, I did not find any recent book reviews that were not offered by readers on Caldwell fan sites. I did not find these sources to be credible.

Although Taylor Caldwell, author of Dear and Glorious Physician, was primarily known for her "intricately plotted and suspenseful stories, which depicter family tensions and the development of the U.S. from an agrarian society into a leading industrial state of the world" (1), she also wrote fictional biographies that captured the attention of readers on a wide scale. In this novel, Caldwell writes about the life of Saint Lucanus and the experiences that led him to his life of service and his writing of the Gospel of Luke in the Bible. While many novels gain popularity because of their racy subject matter or from being banned in schools or libraries, other readers are intrigued by comments a novel makes socially or politically. These interests are often influenced by what is going on in the country in these realms as well. During the 1950s, the country was experiencing a social movement led by conservatives with emphasis placed on family and the importance of religion. In fact, the 1950s saw a resurgence of religious movements, arguably since the Enlightenment. Many however, viewed this as simply an aberration from a nation that is invested in keeping church and state separate. Regardless, the majority of the American population is Christian; a less than generous estimate generally pegs around 75% of the population as self-proclaimed Christians, regardless of whether or not they are a practicing member of an established religion or attend church. Therefore, it is not hard to understand why a novel written by someone who has already been established as a best selling author would gain a wide readership, especially during this time of relative religious fervor. Also, while overtly religious books would not necessarily attract a mainstream audience, Caldwell, an author of several other bestsellers, had no religious ties and could be separated from "fanatics". This is another reason why this novel reached a wider audience than a strict historical biography about the life of Saint Luke would have. Further, this novel not only works to reveal the life of Saint Lucanus from a religious perspective, but it also offers weighty commentary on political issues as well as it moves through his life as a "man of medicine". In Caldwell's delving into the ins and outs of Lucanus' political pursuits, the reader sees many of the obstacles he faced and can relate them to contemporary political life. Themes of perseverance, compassion, humility, and humanity that shape this novel also made it a universally appealing work for a wide audience. At a time when the family was an important social focus, these themes were attractive to mainstream readers. Caldwell delves into Lucanus' family life, exploring the ties between families that helped him both gain position and learn from experience the skills that were necessary to become a physician and a follower of Christ. However, it would be a safe assumption to make that the topic of a saint in the bible would not be a generally timeless or national subject of enduring interest. Few people spend time discussing the life and times of Saint Luke, or any other saint for that matter. This is one reason why this novel did not remain on the best selling list for very long. While topics covering wars, scandal, or other events that tend to grab the universal interest of a nation, a long and at times laborious novel on the life of Saint Luke did not. While other novels surrounded by social and political controversy such as To Kill a Mockingbird enjoyed time on the best sellers list in subsequent years, Dear and Glorious Physician contained virtually no inciting claims or subject matter. In a time when civil liberties and the Cold War were at the forefront of American concern, a novel about the life of Saint Luke would not be able to maintain its hold on readers for a long span of time.
